Light is an amazing symbol of hope as darkness is a symbol of hopelessness. A lamp lit continuously for all to see was meant as a reminder for the people that they remember the Lord as the light and that memory would be presented to all their generations. The purity of that light, set on a lampstand of pure gold was symbolic of God’s holy presence being the light of the world. Speaks so much of the new Jerusalem – streets paved with gold and there is no light for God Himself lights the city.
That is our hope and our home.
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly. Aaron shall set it up in the tent of meeting, outside the curtain of the covenant, to burn from evening to morning before the Lord regularly; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. He shall set up the lamps on the lampstand of pure gold before the Lord regularly. – Leviticus 24:1-4
